Michael Jordan tried out for Laney's varsity team as a 5'11" sophomore and didn't make it, only his taller friend Leroy Smith did. He spent that year dominating junior varsity instead, putting up several 40-point games, then grew four inches over the summer and finally cracked varsity as a junior. Over his two varsity seasons, Laney went a combined 32-14, and Jordan averaged 25.4 points, 12 rebounds, and 5.3 assists a game, capping his senior year with 29 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 10 assists a night. He wasn't even ranked among the nation's top 300 recruits heading into that senior season, yet still earned a spot on the 1981 McDonald's All-American team.
