As a sophomore, Paul Pierce and Kansas entered the 1997 NCAA Tournament with just one loss all season and were the overwhelming favorite to win it all. They fell to Arizona 85-82 in the Sweet Sixteen, the eventual national champions. Pierce broke down at the postgame press conference, and decades later called it a loss that "still stings." He returned for his junior year anyway, was named a consensus first-team All-American after averaging 20.4 points and 6.7 rebounds a game, and won Big 12 Tournament MVP in back-to-back years before entering the 1998 NBA Draft. Kansas retired his No. 34.
